Pauls Build

hristmas was great this year as we had plenty of time off, to concentrate on Pauls chassis.
Pauls chassis strip was mostly the same as mine, with a few
modifications. An IRS framehead has a lot more bolts holding it to the body, and a few welds which shouldn`t have been there, but the judicious use of a fork lift truck soon had them apart. We thought Pauls Beetle was in pretty good condition, lets face it , it had just passed its MOT, but once the body was
removed, it was as rotten as a pear. A warning note for anyone thinking of
buying a Beetle, check it thoroughly.
Two days hard graft, and the body was off and the chassis stripped and ready for sand blasting. One week later and the chassis is clean, painted and ready for cutting, new framehead and floor pans and welding back together.
Not bad for a few days work, both chassis have reached the same stage and its only the start of January.

Bloody hard work, this kit car building.

As the chassis builds are very similar you can find detailed instructions at
My Build.

Paul`s detailed instructions for a modified front torsion bar with coil over shocks and his Golf steering rack will appear here shortly.

Fitting the Doors, Bonnet and Engine Cover

The panels you will receive from L&B Cars is untrimmed. This is to facilitate the fitting.
Have you noticed how many doors don`t fit properly because they have been overtrimmed.
Take your time and slowly file back the panels to obtain an equal gap around each. A large rasp is ideal for this. Allow suitable space for the seals you will be fitting later. Porsche gaps were 3.5mm all the way around.

The brackets for the engine lid are straightforward enough to fit, place the lid in the aperture and mark the position of the bolt holes. Cut slots where you can, this will give you plenty of adjustment.

The bonnet is the same principle, but we re-designed the brackets to make them stronger. Paul still isn`t happy and will probably change them again.

The door hinges are supplied studded through to the sub chassis. We found this tricky and changed them for bolts. Exact dimensions for the holes will appear later. Same principle though, cut slots not holes.
